Does it ever feel like you can’t find a peaceful space to practice Yoga or meditation?  Follow these 5 steps to make your place feel like a wellness sanctuary!

Step 1

You need a space to be -

As long as this space is somewhere you can be quiet, alone with yourself and free from distractions, then it’s perfect.  Don’t get discouraged if you have a smaller place, you really only need enough space for your mat and a few inches around so you don’t hit anything and hurt yourself.  So, schedule some time to be there by yourself for at least 20 minutes (my recommendation).

Step 2

You need stuff –

You can get by with as little as a blanket on the floor and a willingness to move.  I personally prefer just a grip mat and a meditation cushion for both my own practice and my client sessions.  In stark opposition, there are really no limits to how many props you can use in one session.  You can incorporate different props to help with specific poses or routines; items like a Yoga strap, inversion bench, foam roller, bolster pillow, foam blocks, woven blanket, resistance bands, yoga wheel…the list goes on!

Check out my Amazon Shop for recommendations on everything I’ve tried (and liked) in the past.

Step 3

You need sound –

I believe that sound plays a big part in the enjoyment of this time alone with your body.  Sound bath can be such an amazing supplement to breath work or meditation.  In my studio, anytime we are moving our bodies, we’re moving to music.  I like to use the Spotify app for my music selections. I usually have 3 or 4 songs in mind to set the tone for the class, but I can never put together a whole hour’s worth of music - so Spotify handles it for me!

Here are just a few of my favorite playlists on Spotify:

Channel: Shop Anousha

  • Electonica for Vinyasa or Hatha Yoga - Grounding
  • Low-fi beats for Yin or Restorative Yoga - Dreaming
  • Hip-Hop songs for Power Yoga - Banishing

Step 4

You need vibes –

To truly make the most of the moment, you want to add ambiance.  When all five senses are stimulated, I notice my clients enjoy the movement more – like the body is in complete harmony.  Since you already picked music and you are moving on the mat with bare feet, sound and touch are satisfied so sight, smell and taste are left.

In the morning, I like practicing outside, burning Palo Santo and drinking ice coffee…but in the evening, I like sipping lemon water, moving in front of the art in my living room and using a really calming oil like the ‘Dreaming’ Shop Anousha oil.

Below are some ideas you might like to choose from:
